Liberty Storm Volunteer Opportunities
Parents of swimmers are part of the team, and you are essential to our program operating smoothly! LSST has volunteer opportunities for all parents.
In order for meets to run efficiently, it’s critical to have volunteers in each and every position. You can find more information about each role below. Training is available for all roles at the Mock Meet / Volunteer Clinics on Saturday 5/16/2026 and Saturday 5/30/2026. Supplies are always provided.
Sign up through each meet or event in Swimtopia. Roles for meets are split by session: session 1 = 1st half of meet; session 2 = second half of meet; full session = entire meet. Please do not sign up for a spot if you cannot work that session. If you sign up for a spot, it is your responsibility to find a replacement.
Volunteer Role Descriptions
Timer: Each timer is responsible for starting and stopping a stopwatch for each race, and for recording the swimmer’s time on the time card. Timers need to confirm that the swimmer’s name matches the name written on teh time card. There are two timers per lane; starters switch ends of the pool for 8 & under events. 14 timers are needed per meet, plus fill-ins.
Runner: The runner is responsible to collecting time cards from timers and DQ slips from stroke and turn judges after each event. The runner delivers these to the computer table. 2 runners per meet.
Stroke and Turn Judges: Judges are responsible for watching swimmers to ensure that the stroke movements are legal. If a swimmer makes an illegal move, a DQ (disqualification slip) is filled out. Basic knowledge of legal and illegal movements for each stroke is required. 4 judges per meet.
Clerk of Course: Multiple parents work together to call out upcoming heats, place swimmers in correct chairs (corresponding with their heat and lane number), and guide swimmers to their lanes. One clerk will announce events and call swimmers. 4 clerks per meet.
Starter: The starter starts each heat by calling a series of commands and sounding the horn that begins the race. A script is provided. It is very helpful to swimmers when there is continuity in this role; please consider volunteering for multiple meets. 2 starters per meet.
Ribbon Table: Once labels have been printed, ribbon table volunteers place them on the appropriate ribbon and sort the ribbons by swimmers’ last name. Each team provides their own volunteer to label their own team’s ribbon. 2 volunteers per meet.
Concession Stand Worker: Concession workers work in shifts to assist the concession stand organizer on the day of the meet. You will be given time to watch your swimmer! 2 workers per meet.
Hospitality: Hospitality volunteers keep other coaches and volunteers from wilting! They make rounds, providing water, other cold drinks, and snacks that are provided and prepared by concession stand workers. 1-2 hospitality workers per meet.
Computer: The computer volunteer is responsible for data entry into the computer during each meet. This position requires continuity, and training at the Mock Meet / Volunteer Clinic is required except for returning computer volunteers. 2 computer volunteers per meet.
Donut and Juice Breakfast Organizer: This volunteer is responsible for organizing and purchasing/getting donations for the donut and juice breakfast held the morning of picture day. Please let the Team Manager (Ashley McCarthy) know ASAP if you are interested! 1 volunteer.
Donut and Juice Breakfast Servers: Servers will help set up and serve donuts and juice during picture day. 4 servers on picture day.
Friday Night Meet Set-Up: The more hands on deck, the faster we finish! There is a check-list of things that need to be done. Set-up starts at 8 PM. If you’re an evening practice family, please consider this role; kids are welcome to help! Many volunteers each Friday before home meet. Click here to view the meet set-up checklist.
